Wouldn't it be great if your home became tidier, happier, and easier to maintain this coming year? This may sound cliché, but it's possible! There are small, simple habits that are so easy to practice but can make a huge difference in your home life. Try a few (or all!) of these habits as your practical New Year's resolutions for 2024. You'll be amazed at how they improve your home organizing, interior decor, and everyday lifestyle.
We all have tiny tasks that we often put off: placing shoes properly on the rack, putting away groceries, washing dishes right after use... the list goes on. The thing with these tasks is, they're extremely easy to do right there and then, but when we ignore them (as we often do), they soon pile up into a mountain of mess! So, for 2024, practice doing these small things on the spot, without delay.
Do you instinctively grab your mobile phone when you have five minutes of free time? Maybe you're waiting for pasta to cook or waiting for a meeting to start. Try not to look at your phone during these precious minutes. Instead, find a quick off-screen activity to do. It doesn't matter whether it's five sit-ups, wiping your counters, or just looking at your garden. The point is to give your eyes -- and your brain -- a rejuvenating break.

Speaking of screen time, it's crucial to wind down off-screen before going to bed. Numerous studies confirm that the "blue light" from our electronic devices (like cellphones, computers, and TVs) significantly disrupt the quality of our sleep. Scientists recommend spending an hour without these electronics before bedtime. How about a nice bath, some meditation, or even reading an actual book?

It's so relaxing to come home to a neat, tidy bed at the end of the day -- so why do we always skip making the bed in the morning? One common reason is that we're often in a hurry upon waking up. To remedy this, challenge yourself to spend just two minutes for quickly folding your sheets and piling your pillows every day. Two minutes tops. You don't need a hotel-like perfect bed, just a made one.

Have you ever noticed how some things just keep ending up at a certain spot? Your purse keeps landing on the front couch, your paperwork keeps spreading out on the dining table, and your kids' toys keep wandering into the hall. Take this as a sign that these things need to be stored in that area.
In your entryway, add a hook or rack for your handbag. Near your dining table, keep a filing cabinet or assign a drawer to stash all your papers in. And in that room that keeps getting cluttered with toys, add easy-access bins for your little ones to reach.

Shopping your house means checking the different rooms in your home to see if there are items you can reuse or repurpose, instead of purchasing new things right away. This is a great habit to help save money while minimizing waste. You'll be amazed at the decor pieces you can swap around and the containers that can find new life in a different room!

When you do need to buy something new, see if you can find a non-plastic version of it. Household plastics contain "forever chemicals" that are harmful to health and accumulate in our bodies permanently! To minimize your exposure (and your family's), seek out alternative materials like wood, stainless steel, glass, metal, paper, fabric, or woven fibers. Besides being healthier, these sustainable materials look so aesthetic, too!

Parents, hear us out. Sometimes, it's good to let your children have a say in household decisions, as this can give them a sense of ownership and responsibility in those decisions.
Find moments where they can harmlessly provide their opinions. For instance, when redecorating, you can ask, "Which of these three colors do you like best for your bedroom?" or "Which cabinet should be the home of your schoolbag?" With subtle reinforcement, they'll gradually get more engaged in home tidying!
