Have trouble falling asleep or staying asleep? We feel you. Even the best of us get restless at night for a multitude of reasons: stress, gadgets, personal worries, and the demands of everyday life.
If sleep issues are affecting your health, it may be best to see a doctor to determine if there's a deep-seated cause. Outside of that, you can take steps to lull your body to sleep better, and it all starts with how your bedroom looks and feels. Try these fantastic bedroom decor tricks for better quality, restful sleep.
First things first: no matter how well-furnished, a bedroom can't be restful if it's messy. So, take an honest look at your space and start putting away clutter. If you can, equip your room with closed storage such as cabinets, drawers, and under-bed bins. These make it easier for you to maintain the tidiness of the room, as you can simply stash away all those odds and ends.
One more tip: Practice making your bed when you wake up. This way, when you come back to sleep, you'll be greeted by a nice and tidy space instead of a chaotic jumble.
Cozy temperature is a major factor for comfortable sleep. If you find yourself tossing and turning on warm nights, it may be time to invest in a room-cooling appliance. But that's not the only way to lower the room temp! Read our blog post on money-saving but stylish ways to keep your house cool.
One helpful tip there is to use light, breathable fabrics for your beddings, such as linen, cotton, and bamboo. We love the example above from our real-life customer Briza R. (Plus, she shows great taste with that wall art! 😉)

During the day, natural light can make a room feel airy and serene. But at night, you'll want to stop outside illumination and noise from entering your space as these can disrupt sleep. If possible, invest in blackout curtains that effectively darken the room while also muffling street sounds to some degree.
Some colors are energizing while others are best for calming the senses. On your next redecorating, focus on a minimal color scheme that's suitable for winding down. You can read our quick guide on the most calming color palettes for your home. They include white + wood, gray on gray, and white + light blue. Just look at our example above -- it's as soothing as a lullaby!

Just because you want a peaceful bedroom doesn't mean it has to be boring. You can definitely decorate your space with meaningful things that you love, but we suggest you curate your decor items and keep only those that are soothing to your psyche. You can, for example, grace your shelves with a few elegant tchotchkes, or hang a minimalist yet beautiful artwork over your bed.

Many of us have resorted to placing our work desks in the bedroom, especially as working from home became acceptable. But science tells us that it's best to separate our work from our sleeping space. Working in your bedroom leaves your mind and body with no place to truly rest. Plus, the glare of electronic screens has been found to reduce the quality of sleep.
The ideal thing to do is to carve out a separate workstation outside your bedroom (we show you easy ways to make your own home office without remodeling). However, if it's just not possible to keep your paperwork or computer out, get some closed storage options (like drawers) to hide work stuff at the end of the day.

Soft lighting is essential in the bedroom because it allows our body to transition from active mode to rest mode. Consider the night-time lighting you have in your sleeping area. Does your lamp give off a soft glow, or is it too bright? Or maybe your bedroom relies only on default ceiling lights that are meant for activity-filled rooms.
Thankfully, dimmable lights are easy to find and install these days. We even found a DIY tutorial to make your existing lamps dimmable, courtesy of Diane of In My Own Style blog. You can also visit your local hardware store and ask for dimmable lighting options.
This is not a decor tip per se, but a super-helpful lifestyle tip we've been practicing ourselves. For about 30 minutes to an hour before your target bedtime, do nothing but relaxing activities. Read a book, massage yourself, soak in a nice bath -- anything that doesn't involve physical exertion or looking at electronic screens.
Winding down like this eases your mind and body after a long day of being busy. You can also try this if you find yourself wide awake in the middle of the night. One of our favorites is reading an easy novel under a soft light. It can literally put you to sleep!
