Every year, as the air gets cooler and the trees change colors, homes across the nation also turn a new leaf with warm blankets, burnished color palettes, and a ton of pumpkin motifs. It's the fall season, and everyone's all about coziness in their interiors. But as much as we all love traditional autumn decor, sometimes, there's a yearning for something fresh, remarkable, and extraordinary.
Thankfully, this year's autumn decor trends bridge the gap between the classic and the new. These 2024 fall decor ideas are easy to incorporate in your home, too! Take a look, be inspired, and let's get redecorating!
Recent design seasons have an undertone of nostalgia and sentimentalism, which is why in the most stylish houses, you'll find antique heirlooms front and center. From sweet porcelain figurines to patinaed frames to old wood furniture, handed-down pieces lend uniqueness and personality to a space. And if you feel like you have a lot of heirloom items to display, you're in luck: nostalgic maximalism is also on trend this year!

Bright colors are usually excluded from autumnal palettes, but this year, professional designers are using them for a dose of cheer. According to interior designer Susan Wemlinger, bold pops of color like orange, turquoise, blues, and yellows can work as accent colors such as on pillows and wall art. We have to admit, against a background of browns and deep reds, these brights are a joy to see!

Home decorators are paying more attention to lighting fixtures, both in terms of the type of illumination and the design of the object itself. This is even more significant in autumn, when warm lighting is important for coziness. Try layering two or more types of illumination, such as a unique pendant lamp (accent light) on top of recessed lighting (ambient light). That way, you can also feature a lighting fixture that looks stunning as a decor piece as well.
Some say the appeal of farmhouse style has faded, but this year, decorators are once again emulating that homey, cozy vibe. Plaids and ginghams have returned, alongside old-school touches like patterned wallpaper, rustic furniture, and family themes on wall decor. Don't be afraid to display your own family photos and mementos, too!

Recent interior design seasons have favored organic textures for table and countertop materials such as marble, rock, and travertine. These are not only beautiful to the eye and to the touch, but also durable and versatile. Traditionally, fall decorating is dominated by rustic wood, but we're now seeing a lovely balance between wood and rock elements. For instance, a travertine dining table can be perfectly complemented with wooden chairs in a similar hue.
Bonus tip: You don't have to overhaul your furniture to get the stone look. Our favorite budget decorating thing to do is to create a vignette (a.k.a. a "design moment") using smaller, more affordable items. For example, you can grab some stoneware like a lamp and a vase, arrange them on your living room console table, and turn them into a stylish focal point.

Towards the end of last year, we noted how grandma-inspired decorating has gained popularity -- and that spills over to this fall, when sweet ruffles and pleats are still a key home feature! The living room above is a cozy example, as presented by the design mavens of Grace Monroe Home. The designers say the comeback of ruffles will go well with patterns like gingham and stripes. So homey and nostalgic!
Another resurging star in interior decor is glass in bold colors and interesting designs. From diamond-cut amber glass bottles to brightly colored 1930s wine coupes, these brilliant pieces are already being featured on the most stylish dining tables, home bars, and kitchen collections. And what perfect timing -- statement glassware can wow your guests as you entertain for Thanksgiving!
Bonus tip: Vintage cups and wine glasses are once again celebrated, but before you serve anything on decades-old vessels, make sure they don't have lead or other toxic substances mixed in the glass itself.
While chunky knits remain the classic fabric for warmth, velvet has presented itself as the more style-conscious option. Lots of homeowners cherish velvet upholstery on their sofas and chairs, but if you're not up for that commitment, no worries -- decorators are actually leaning towards more swappable velvet pieces this year, such as pillows and covers. Just one smartly draped throw blanket can change the tone of your space!
Bonus tip: Want a more affordable alternative to velvet? Microfiber fleece is our recommendation. It's just as warm, soft, and drape-able!

Environmentally sustainable decorating is here to stay. This is the era of veering away from plastics, single-use objects, and disposables, in favor of materials that are less synthetic and longer lasting. We pointed out above how stone tabletops are huge this season, and there are other eco-friendly materials you can explore.
For instance, bamboo and hemp are reemerging as top rug fibers. Recycled wood and antiques are popular for furniture. And for smaller accent items, materials such as clay, ceramics, and wood blocks are gracing the most wabi-sabi homes.

Just to top off your cozy, earthy autumn interiors, add a few metallic pieces here and there. The little glimpses of glimmer are a nice punctuation to all the natural textures of the season. We especially love seeing brass with patina, as it evokes a sense of age and heritage that one feels in their family home. A brass dish on your coffee table, alongside a pair of brass candleholders on your mantel, can make a difference in your living room ambiance.
