Fall/Autumn 2022 home decor trends

Autumn is such a beautiful, magical season that brings new joy and inspiration. Maybe it's the way the weather gets perfectly crisp, or the way the leaves turn into lovely rich colors. Or it could very well be the re-emergence of pumpkin spice everything! Whatever it is, the fall season brings out the stylistas and home decorators in many of us. This is a prime season for home redecorating!

Here are top interior decor trends for autumn 2022, as picked by design experts. We have tons of tips on how you can use these trends in your own home, so read on!

1. Warm, earthy palettes

Many interior designers agree that this year's fall decor isn't about moody browns and rusty reds, but about warm wood, taupe, terracotta, and even soft, leafy greens. As style expert Jenny Reimold says, it's a time to move away from "jack-o-lantern orange" hues. The warmer color palettes this year create a more inviting ambiance that's refreshing after the doldrums of the pandemic, and is perfect for Thanksgiving!

Luckily, warm earth tones are easy to decorate with, especially if you already have a nice neutral base. But to keep it from looking boring, layer on various shades of earthy colors in various textures. See our two examples below:

2. Chunky curves

We're seeing big, bold curves this season -- from chunky, round-backed sofas, to retro-geometric lamps and vases. Designer Sarah Weichel is just one of the many experts confirming this trend, adding that these playful rounded shapes also serve as a transitional element as the seasons change.

If you're a fan of these curvy silhouettes but aren't swapping out your rectangle couch just yet, try little vignettes of decor instead: for instance, two funky vases grouped together on your mantle, or a single arched mirror greeting your guests at your entry.

3. Lavender

Surprised by this unusual fall color? We are too, but pleasantly! Lavender and purple hues have been an understated decor element all year, what with "Very Peri" being named the Color of the Year 2022. This autumn, use this pastel shade for an unexpected yet oh-so-soft dose of color. Interior designer Sanel Konyar suggests pairing lavender colors with soft neutrals for a lovely palette.

4. Fuzzy upholstery

As the weather gets chilly, homemakers get toasty! Warm, fuzzy blankets are a staple for autumn, but this year, they're spilling out of the bedroom and into living room furnishings. Furniture designers everywhere highlight upholstery fabrics that have lots of texture -- "furry, nubby, or cozy," as designer Caroline Brackett says.

Which textiles are under this category? Boucle, tweed, crushed velvet, and sheepskin, for starters. If you're not getting your living room set reupholstered just yet, we say it also counts if you just pile on cushions and throw blankets!

5. Sunflowers

Embracing the chilly weather doesn't mean being all gloomy. When it comes to home decor, sunflower arrangements and sunflower imagery are a lovely way to cheer up specific corners of your house this autumn. In fact, arts-and-crafts maven Melissa Mills considers sunflowers "the perfect transition" from the bright days of summer to the cooler days of fall.

In addition, the cheery yellow of sunflowers perfectly complements the colors of autumnal foliage. So if you're planning your Thanksgiving dinner decor, consider adding a few sunflowers to your centerpiece!

6. Barbiecore

Yes, Barbie as in the doll! Barbiecore is a pink and playful aesthetic trend isn't slowing down even in autumn. If your style sense loves breaking seasonal rules and keeping your house bright and peppy, this trend should be right up your alley. Or, if you like a sweet, feminine take on glamorous decor, you might like Barbiecore, too!

7. Coastal casual

Another aesthetic style that (re-)emerged over the summer is "coastal grandmother" or "coastal grandma." Before you bristle at the term, know that it refers to a relaxed, breezy vibe, replete with loose linen shirts and lightweight sandals perfect for walks at the beach. Think Diane Keaton in "Something's Gotta Give"!

For home decor, this unexpected coastal trend keeps showing up in jute rugs, wicker baskets, rattan furniture, and linen tablecloths. Yes, this style persists even this fall! The emphasis this time is thoughtful minimalism: not to over-adorn your home with seashells and sand, but to keep the ambiance light and airy, and to use organic materials for your practical home items.

8. High-shine finishes

Metallic accents just won't quit being on-trend, but this year, they share the limelight with mirrors and mirrored surfaces. This explains the new popularity of statement mirrors (including oversized floor-leaning ones) and polished metal furniture.

To use this trend without looking garish, UK homeware maven Beth Pickford advises a hard-plus-soft pairing. Get just one statement piece with a high-shine finish -- such as a sideboard or a coffee table -- then pair it with super-soft elements like a deep pile rug. We also love adding plants or flower arrangements to the mix for a graceful, natural balance.
