wall pictures on skinny wall - unexpected places to hang wall art

News flash: wall art doesn't always have to hang on plain walls! There are areas around the house that people don't usually think of decorating, but can instantly look fab with an artwork. If you're like us and you just can't stop collecting pictures and prints, this is perfect for you. Read on and you might find unexpected wall art locations in your home.

1. Wall art on windows

Windows are highly visual by themselves, offering a view to the outdoors. But when you complement them with an artwork, they can become a gorgeous vignette that looks like it's straight out of a romantic film set -- even if your view outside isn't so attractive. Try these tips:

You can arrange a small artwork with some decorative objects on your windowsill...

Or mount a medium-sized wall decor on the center window pane...

Or lean a large picture on the windowsill, alongside a potted plant or vase of flowers.

2. Wall art on kitchen shelves

Open kitchen shelves can quickly look utilitarian and messy because of all the displayed cookware. How about turning this display into a museum-like collection by interspersing your practical items with decorative items? Below, these functional shelves get spruced up with a couple of Gear Den canvas prints.

3. Wall art leaning on the floor

Got a little corner that lacks oomph? Maybe all it needs is a large artwork or two leaning on the floor. Stylish decorators use this trick to spotlight special nooks in their interiors. Just take a look at this seating corner we found on the Paper & Stitch blog:

4. Wall art in bathroom/toilet

Bathrooms are often just enclosed spaces that are all function and no cheer. But, with a little thoughtfulness in decorating, they can become comfy personal spots where hygiene is a pleasure, not a chore. Take some time to pick a wall print or two that will brighten up your restroom. (We love funny wall signs that'll bring out chuckles from your guests!)

5. Wall art on stairs

That irregular wall on the underside of the stairs (called a knee wall) can be tricky to decorate, especially if you have a tall staircase that gets a lot of visual attention. Wall art to the rescue! In our example below, a vertical artwork perfectly complements the height of the staircase, turning this little spot from awkward to amazing.

6. Wall art in laundry room

This is another functional space that could use a little more joy, so go ahead and hang some bright, peppy, or even silly wall decor! Our decor pick below uses humor to strongly motivate you to get those loads done.

7. Wall art on balcony or patio

Wall decor outside the house? It can be fabulous! One way to style an outdoor or semi-outdoor space is to create a lovely wall vignette featuring an artwork you like. To protect your wall piece from the elements, make sure it's at a roofed spot that doesn't get direct sunlight. And one more pro tip: canvas prints with wood frame backing are the perfect type of wall art for this!

Here, our customized family wall sign completes the farmhouse look of a patio:

And below, a pool deck gets a pretty wall treatment that makes it a great spot for photo ops:

8. Skinny walls

A random narrow wall can be tricky: it may not be able to house regular-sized artworks, but it can still be noticeable enough as a bare spot in the house. Our solution? Go vertical! You can hang one tall vertical wall art like this...

Or you can stack multiple smaller pictures like this:
