fun affordable Valentine's Day date ideas

Regardless of who your Valentine will be this February 14 -- whether it's your spouse, finance/e, girlfriend, boyfriend, or even your best friend -- you're probably on the lookout for date ideas. You want to do something affordable but meaningful, memorable but not cheesy. Most of all, it has to be a date that your Valentine will love.

Your search stops here, because we've gathered 10 amazing ideas for a Valentines Day date -- ideas that are fun, budget-friendly, and will bring a smile to your loved one's face. Pick one -- or two!

1. Serenade at a bonfire.

Take your beloved to a nice beach, build a bonfire, and whip out your guitar to sing them a heartfelt serenade. If your budget allows, go the extra mile and rent a nearby cabin for a sweet overnight stay. Don't forget to bring marshmallows and warm blankets! 2. Go to a park.

Whether it's an adrenaline-fueled amusement park or a quiet and thoughtful historic site, going to a park is much cheaper and more interesting than a restaurant date. Make sure to choose a park that goes with your loved one's interests.

3. Go on a picnic.

Picnics are a timeless but always-sweet idea. Pack a picnic basket with light food, some chocolate, and refreshing drinks. Don't forget the flowers! Then head over to a nice, airy field in your area -- or if it's too chilly out, have a picnic indoors in front of your fireplace!

4. Set up an at-home cinema.

Movie night is a foolproof date idea, but go beyond just putting on Netflix. Turn your living room or den into a private cinema by using an LCD projector to enlarge your entertainment. Arrange a cozy couch in front of it, set up a popcorn stand, and even put up a fun cinema sign like this one:

5. Bike to your special spots.

It's already so sweet for a couple to bike together. Ahead of Valentine's Day, plot out some specific destinations for you and your loved one to bike to -- destinations that mean something in your relationship. They might include the place where you first met, the cafe where you had your first date, and the site where you took the next step in your relationship.

6. Recreate your first date.

Speaking of milestones, why not make your V-Day date just like your first date? Take your beloved to the same place, wear the same clothes, and revisit all the funny/awkward/endearing moments. If you took photos back then, recreate those photos now, too!

7. Prepare a themed dinner.

Who needs overpriced restaurants when you can create a fantastic dinner date at home? The key here is to pick a unique theme. You could do, for example, a 'red carpet' dinner with a glamorous table setting (decorated with inexpensive materials) and some wine on the menu. Or you can model your decor and menu after a pop culture thing that your loved one is a fan of. Harry Potter dinner date, anyone?

8. Turn your home into a spa.

A couple's spa treatment would be a heavenly date for Valentine's, but a more affordable version would be to have it at home! Set up a nice bathtub soak for your sweetheart, then lead them to the bedroom for a relaxing massage. Light some scented candles and put on calming music, too!

9. Watch the sunset.

Sunsets are beautiful and romantic, and best of all, they're free! Find a spot in your city where you can get a great sunset view, like the beach, atop a hill, or even on the rooftop of a building. Take your Valentine there just before the sunset starts, lay down a blanket to sit on, then just enjoy nature's majesty -- and each other's company.

10. Slow-dance at home.

In movies, we always see couples falling in love during a slow dance. But where do you do that without having to pay exorbitant prices? Why, in your own living room, of course! Before your sweetheart comes in, transform your space with magical fairy lights, candles, and some rose petals. Then put on some light jazz and waltz the night away. (PS. It helps to practice your steps in advance!)
