Single-Decor Tricks: Each of These Decor Pieces Can Change A Room

one decor trick for homes

Would you believe that just one piece of decor can transform any room in your house? It's completely possible! If you want to refresh the look and feel of your home without spending lots of $$$, you can focus on adding one item that truly makes a difference. Here, we show you some tried-and-tested ways that a single decorative accent can change an entire room. We bet you can work this magic in your own home today.

1. Indoor plant

A visible house plant instantly adds vitality and color to any space, making it feel warmer and more homey. This is especially true if you like keeping your home minimal or on a neutral color palette -- sometimes, an all-white or all-beige room can look clinical, but lovely greenery can bring it back to life.

If you don't feel like you have a green thumb to keep an indoor plant alive, try keeping a succulent -- they're very low-maintenance yet they can grow into pretty centerpieces for your coffee table.

2. Mirror

Interior decorators will never get tired of recommending mirrors because they really do work wonders! A favorite trick is to install a mirror next to a natural light source like a window to create the illusion of another window. The room will feel brighter and more spacious with this one little change.

3. Wallpaper

Wallpapering is perhaps the easiest way to add pattern without cluttering up your interiors. Plus, you can choose the removable kind so you can change your mind anytime! Not sure you want to jazz up all four walls? Just pick one to serve as your accent wall and decorate accordingly. You can even wallpaper in smaller doses, like on specific wall panels or on the risers of your stairs!

4. Wall art

No-brainer, right? Just one well-selected, well-placed artwork takes away the plainness of a blank wall, and can serve as an interesting conversation piece. For maximum effect, go with a large-size piece that makes a good focal point. Bonus tip: Opt for a canvas print as it's the perfect balance between quality and price.

5. Throws

For instant pizzazz and coziness, minus the commitment, throw in a pretty pillow or two! Choose slipcover designs that add color to your couch or chairs instead of blending in. You don't even have to match all your throws -- mix up the designs and colors, just as long as they are coordinated, like above.

6. Curtains

The pictures above hardly look like the same room, right? All because of one super-simple decor element: curtains! If you have a space that just doesn't look complete despite being well-furnished, try swapping those plain old blinds for brighter drapes. Bonus tip: raise your curtain rods a few inches higher than your window to create the illusion of taller ceilings. Instant sophistication for absolutely no cost!

7. Rug

As the movie line famously goes, a rug can "really tie the room together." Some rooms don't even feel done until you lay down a nice floor textile that complements the rest of the decor. A rule of thumb is to keep the rug design simple if you have a lot of decor in the space already. But if the room has minimal ornamentation, like above, go for a patterned rug for that needed visual impact.
