Ah, motherhood. We hear so many grand words about this life, this full-time job, this vocation, but tried-and-tested mothers know: while the big picture looks noble and beautiful, the devil is in the details! If you're a mother who has raised a kid or two, you'll surely relate to these exasperating but hilarious things about being a mom. 1. You're always on-call... repeatedly.

For your little tykes, it's never enough to call your name once. They have to do it over and over and over again to make sure they get your attention (and your energy!).

 

2. You're surrounded by animals.

Two seconds after giving your kids a bath, there they are, smeared all over with peanut butter and leaving muddy footprints on the floor. Sometimes, you wonder if they're ever going to understand cleanliness and hygiene, or if you'll simply have to swear under your breath for the rest of your life.

3. You're so used to noise that silence is suspicious.

If you have toddlers or school-age kids, you better learn to embrace the chaos... because when your home is suddenly quiet, it means that somewhere in the house, a kid is cutting their own hair or drawing crayon masterpieces on the wall. Yep, never trust the calm before the up-to-no-good storm.

 

4. You have to clean up every two minutes.

The mom-hood routine: Pick up after your children. See the same mess after two minutes. Repeat for 18 years.

You know cleaning up is futile when your kids are still kids, but it's like you're just doomed to do it.

 

5. You try hard to make healthy, appetizing meals, but...

You know you're not the best chef around, but there really are days when microwave meals are a godsend. Know that this is okay -- it's not your fault you had to scrub off Nutella stains from the carpet all day.

6. You have serious fights with your child... who is 4.

Don't worry, you're not being childish (or are you?). All of us moms have been seriously upset at some point by something that our toddler has said to us. And we've launched domestic wars over it. Then we remember that they're 4 and they really don't know what "I hate you" means, and we're back to loving them unconditionally.

7. You. Get. Interrupted. Every. Time.

One of the most challenging things about being a mama is trying to talk to your child. It's not just because their comprehension is still developing -- it's mostly because they won't let you talk uninterrupted! Patience really is a virtue for a mom.

 

8. You get down and dirty.

After everything is said and done about cleanliness, you still recognize how vital it is to actually have fun with your children. The dishes can wait. Riding the train with them around the pillow fort is more urgent right now.

 

9. But you also need that glass of wine!

Wine, margarita, sangria -- whatever your drink is, you know it's your lifeline amid the grueling demands of mom-hood. Hey, at least drinks are cheaper than therapy!
