By far the biggest design 'trend' in 2023 was "quiet luxury," and it looks like it will remain relevant in 2024 -- for good reason. This style is all about timeless, understated elegance. For our homes, quiet luxury interior style is a win-win: it prioritizes subtlety and quality, and doesn't need grandiose decor.
The best part? We can emulate quiet luxury on a budget! Here are easy tips and affordable tricks to decorate your home in quiet luxury style. We promise these are budget-friendly and super doable!
Quiet luxury is a style that evokes wealth and opulence without flaunting brand logos or flashy ornamentation. Because of this, it's also sometimes called "stealth wealth." Have you ever seen someone dressed in a simple way but they just looked so smart and, frankly, rich? Or have you noticed how some homes are relatively sparse and minimal, but you can tell they're upscale? That's quiet luxury.
This aesthetic is far from new, but it truly stole the spotlight in recent years thanks to TV shows like HBO's Succession (image above via Fashion mag) and Big Little Lies (image below via the SDSA). In fashion, crisp tailored clothing and refined jewelry became synonymous with wealth. And in interior decor, a restrained yet elevated approach became the definition of quiet luxury.
Interior designers and decorators agree that the quiet luxury style is not simply a trend but a classic, and thus will stay through 2024. If you like this rich-without-saying style, don't worry, you don't need the Roy family wealth to copy it. Let's tie up our ponytails and get redecorating -- without breaking the bank!
We know decluttering is tedious. However, tidying up really is the number 1 step you can take to make a room feel a bit more premium. When you've eliminated all the unnecessary things, you're left with more space, which then makes the room feel bigger and airier. Plus, one of the basic tenets of quiet luxury is to keep the visuals simple and clean. You can achieve that look by decluttering.
Butter yellow or mint green might not cut it for this interior style. Quiet luxury prefers timeless, reliable colors that make the space look stately. You can opt for a light-and-warm palette with beige, white, or cream, or you can be dark and dramatic with muted blues, dark grays, or even a deep maroon.
If you're not up for repainting the entire room, try painting just the most dominant wall and make it the focal point of the space.

A quiet luxury home practices restraint in decorating, which means minimal visual clutter. Instead of using patterns and prints, this style invests in sumptuous textures and forms that make you go, "Yup, that feels expensive." It could be, for example, a marble countertop here, some handcrafted picture molding there, and an architectural spiral staircase at the center of it all.
Now what's the budget-friendly version? We say "Go faux!" You can easily find faux marble coverings and stick-on wall paneling, for example. Another trick we love is to display some glass decor pieces, like a large glass vase or elegant votives. When arranged on your mantel or as a dining centerpiece, they add luxe without looking loud.

Speaking of textures, a great way to subtly make your space look plush is to pile throws, coverlets, and rugs in an elegant way. The most important rule in layering is to keep all the pieces cohesive in terms of color and style. For instance, if you have a light gray sofa, you can casually drape a cream-colored throw blanket on it alongside throw pillows of complementing colors.

Say goodbye to plastics, acrylics, and veneers. In a true quietly luxurious home, each furniture piece is thoughtfully selected for its quality, craftsmanship, and environmental sustainability. This often veers towards earthy natural materials like stone, solid wood, clay, ceramic, and even natural fibers.
Of course, such high-end pieces cost a fortune, but luckily for all of us, we can source cheaper alternatives from thrift stores, secondhand sellers, and flea markets. Be on the lookout for antique desks, retro lamps, vintage sideboards, and the like.
Bonus tip: If you prefer brand-new or custom-made, check local craftspeople in your area who can help realize your quiet luxury furniture.

In the spirit of elevated minimalism, quiet luxury homes prefer a few investment pieces instead of numerous small decorations. For example, you probably won't find a gallery wall of small pictures in their hallway, but rather a single oversized artwork. Shelves are decorated with large vases and sculptures instead of tiny tchotchkes.
And here's a feature that's often overlooked: these upscale homes have humongous windows. You can fake the look, however, by raising your curtain rods a few inches higher, then dressing each window with drapes that are color-cohesive with your walls.

Quiet luxury may be a tad serious, but it's far from boring. You can cap off your interior decor with an item or two that catches the eye and has a great story to tell. Perhaps it's an interesting coffee table made of reclaimed wood, or a huge floor mirror you found at yard sale. It could even be a statement wall art. No matter how minimalistic your space is, you can spark conversations when you display such pieces.
