Instant Refresh: 10 Ways to Energize Your Space Now

Do you sometimes walk into a room in your house and feel like it's stale, flat, or uninteresting? Or maybe you've looked around the space and felt like something's missing -- you just don't know what. We feel you! Every decor enthusiast has had that blah feeling, especially when a room hasn't been redecorated in a while.

Thankfully, there are quick, easy, and affordable ways to bring back that decor spark in any room. Try these tips for an instant decor refresh!

1. Accent with contact paper.

Wallpaper is a go-to for those who want to refresh their walls and surfaces, but it can be a tad pricey. If you want an inexpensive alternative, contact paper is your new best friend! Above, interior designer Anita Yokota revitalized her kitchen by wrapping her counters with faux marble contact paper. And below, an entryway makes a gorgeous impact with its patterned wall:

2. Hang a contrasting wall art.

Sure, complementary colors look clean and safe, but if you want some instantly eye-catching wow factor in the room, hang a nice piece of art that directly contrasts the wall. It's a surefire way to make the color pop! We also like to create contrast through texture, like the way our wood-inspired artworks (above and below) pop out against smooth walls.

3. Bring in plants.

Nothing beats indoor plants when it comes to revitalizing a room. They add the perfect movement, color, and dimension into an otherwise dull space. Plus, they help improve air quality! For best results, arrange together a few potted plants with varying heights and foliage. And don't be scared of big, lush leaves! The showier, the better!

4. Paint just a portion of furniture.

Got some leftover paint? You can use that to add color to just select parts of furniture. Above, the wooden dining set gets a chic pop of white on its legs and seats. Other examples to consider: some two-toned cabinets (paint only the doors), two-toned shelves (paint only the insides), and accented coffee tables (you can stencil a design on top!).

5. Pull your sofa off the wall.

Rearranging your furniture is a completely free way to refresh the room. But here's a bonus tip: if space permits, try arranging your couches away from the wall and closer to each other.

Placing all the furniture flush against the wall makes the space feel flat, as if everything is just pushed aside, leaving so much idle space at the center. By contrast, when you arrange your living room set closer together, it creates volume and coziness.

Above, a fireplace lounge becomes more intimate by arranging the seats in a circle. And below, a sectional sofa cleverly doubles as a divider between the living room and the rest of the space. Plus, the plants behind the couch make the space more appealing!

6. Revise that gallery wall.

A gallery wall or wall collage is an immediate focal point, so rearranging those pictures can create a new look for the room. But beyond just rearranging your frames, you can take it one step further by switching from multiple pictures to a single large-scale wall art. A large artwork instantly captures the eye, yet it refines the space because there's less visual clutter.

And if you still want your gallery wall to be personal and meaningful, we got you! Gear Den has lots of canvas art prints that you can customize with your family's names and more. See the lovely examples above and below.

7. 'Shop your house' for item swaps.

No buying new stuff! "Shopping your house" simply means going through various rooms at home to see what items you already have that you could reuse, repurpose, or bring into a different room. In the photo above, we brought out our personalized pillow from the bedroom to the living room to add interest to the couch. See more ideas from our blog post on at-home item swaps.

8. Create an art vignette.

Creating vignettes is a well-loved method in interior decorating. A vignette is a deliberate grouping of objects to create a stylish 'picture'. Think of it as little picture-perfect spots in your house. (Learn more about decor vignettes through this blog post.)

Here's a foolproof formula to create a decor vignette: over your buffet or console table, display a beautiful artwork, then add a vase of flowers, then add some small personal effects like books, figurines, or souvenirs. This simple grouping makes an elegant impression in your entryway, dining room, or living room.

9. Add texture.

Even expensive rooms can look dull if there's no variety in texture! When a space is all about matte walls and polished surfaces, it needs a fun element or two to break the monotony. Consider injecting a bit of contrasting materials like velvet, faux fur, metallics, and wovens. Not too much, just a few pieces here and there. How about a statement rattan chair and a fluffy throw?

10. Declutter.

Tidying up is the most practical way to refresh the atmosphere of a room. Often, our household clutter piles up without us noticing, until one day, we enter the room and feel stressed by all the stuff in it. So, in the pursuit of a nice, welcoming ambiance, schedule an afternoon of decluttering for your space.

Remove out-of-place objects such as random clothes and wayward cosmetic bottles. Also edit your open shelves, tabletops, and mantel, making sure they're not crammed with ornaments. See if there are items you can donate and put them away in a box. For other items you can't let go of, hide them from sight via cute storage baskets and bins.

Now, fluff up your pillows, open those curtains, and enjoy your bright, tidy space!
