Real Homes with Fab Decor, Part 4

beautiful real-life homes

Here at Gear Den, we enjoy going through reviews from our real-life customers, and we're repeatedly impressed by their interior style. Whether they decorate with a homey farmhouse theme, or go bold with modern colors and accents, these decor enthusiasts show us how interior design tips can be applied to real-world homes.

Here's our fourth set of favorites from the many fantastic photos that our lovely clients have sent us. (And here's Part 1, Part 2, and Part 3.) Go ahead, copy a decor trick or two for your own home!

1. Classic farmhouse dining room

What better way to start this list than with a dining room done right? Customer Doris S. has lovely dining furniture to begin with, but she makes the set truly homey with the right decor: gingham placemats, a candle-and-greenery centerpiece, and a canvas print of a mealtime blessing. The result is a warm, inviting atmosphere worthy of a magazine spread.

Real-home decor tip: You don't need expensive bouquets or store-bought centerpieces for a beautiful table setting. Above, sprigs of eucalyptus and other leafy greens are simply set in clear glass bottles, then complemented with a single candle for a graceful accent.

2. Verdant fireplace

Joanne B.'s beautiful fireplace is a pitch-perfect combination of classy and cozy. She balances the clean, elegant lines of the fireplace with lots of vibrant, relaxing indoor plants. Then she crowns the mantel with a rustic personalized family artwork, telling us that yes, this home can get "crazy, loud, with a whole lot of love."

Real-home decor tip: Don't be afraid to arrange together plants of various shapes and sizes! This takes away the rigidness and uniformity of any corner of the house, making the space feel more easygoing and livable.

3. Simple-sweet bedroom

We love the feminine softness of this bedroom by Krystel S. There's not much ornamentation here, but she deliberately picked the right bedroom basics to build this ambiance. Those floral beddings and that "Love" wall print are enough to give you sweet dreams!

Real-home decor tip: To create the look of a well-appointed bed, layer various pillows of the same color family. Note the masterful layering above: plain white cushions, topped with plain pink ones, topped with printed ones. They all look put-together because their colors are cohesive. See more pillow-styling tips here!

4. Black-and-white living room

Mary C.'s bold, contemporary living room really makes an impact with all its black and white furnishings and modern art. This is one room where guests are immediately 'transported' to a sophisticated place once they step in -- like entering a posh hotel!

Real-home decor tip: If you're going for a monochromatic color palette, keep it appealing by mixing different textures. Above, we see bold leather, a plush rug, and wood (or wood-like) materials, accented with vases and sculptures of various shapes. What a feast!

5. Elegant entryway

A bench, an artwork, and a tall vase of botanicals -- you can never go wrong with a decor combo like this in Rochelle D.'s home. It's simple but not at all boring. We like this even more because she practices restraint with the colors, opting to keep most of it in soft neutrals, then just adding a pop of color via the dried flowers.

Real-home decor tip: Dried grass and florals are huge in interior decor right now! Take advantage of this inexpensive yet stylish trend by preserving your own bouquet with hair spray (here's how) or cutting some showy pampas grass from your own yard (here's how).

6. Brick fireplace as focal point

It's easy to forgo decorating on a stone hearth -- after all, the stone material is attractive by itself. But Marjorie H. knows that her fireplace is the focal point of the room and just can't be left unadorned. So she subtly places decor around it: a pair of sconces to the side, some decorative knickknacks at the bottom. She tops it all off with wall art in a soft color that does not compete with the brick.

Real-home decor tip: Many people mount their TV over their fireplace, but experts say this is not be the best idea. Excess heat from the hearth is not advisable for electronics. Plus, the height of the TV is way above eye level and could soon strain the posture of viewers.

Instead of a big, bulky television, why not hang your favorite artwork on this wall space? It makes for a more appealing vignette that does not result in stiff necks!

7. Rustic, woodsy dining room

Stefanie C. is so lucky to have her dining room surrounded by beautiful trees outside. She brings that nature vibe indoors with her wood dining furniture, autumnal table setting, and rustic wall accents. This is a wonderful place to have Thanksgiving dinner!

Real-home decor tip: If you want your own nature-inspired space but don't have the lush outdoor scenery, no worries -- just emulate the atmosphere with wall art. The room above is actually decorated with a forest-themed artwork, which you can see next to the wall clock. Check it out through the link below.

8. Two-toned bedroom

An accent wall is a surefire way to tell your guests, "Look at this fabulous part of our home!" In the bedroom above, Briza R. does a wonderful job spotlighting her bed by pushing it right up at the center of her specially-painted wall. The proportional wall art is the cherry on top!

Real-home decor tip: The thing that makes this space pop yet look so cohesive is the perfect color palette. The trick? Complement and contrast. The two walls above are painted just the right complementary shades, while the furnishings are in contrasting colors from the walls.

9. Red accents

Speaking of colors that pop, are you brave enough to feature a red furniture piece? Latosha H. does that with panache by decorating her fire engine-red cabinet with cute little potted plants. Then she completes the eye-catching vignette with a monogram artwork that subtly matches the furniture. Brilliant!

Real-home decor tip: Want your decor pieces to harmonize without being 'matchy-matchy'? Choose one main color, then vary the amount of that color across different objects. In the example above, the shelf is pure red all throughout, while the wall art above it uses the same red but in a smaller amount. As a result, the red color 'threads' these pieces together, but you don't drown in a sea of fiery-colored decor!

10. Rustic farmhouse dining room

We round up this list with a serene but stylish farmhouse dining room courtesy of Angelia M. Pretty much every design choice here is admirable, from the beautiful molding and wainscoting, to the soft wall color, to the lovely dining set. The best part is, the room isn't overwhelmed by decor, hence there's ample space for gathering 'round. This room is perfect for a nice Sunday brunch!

Real-home decor tip: If you love pastel-colored walls but don't want to make the room feel like a nursery, balance the softness with solid furnishings and decor. The example above shows how a rich-colored wood table provides weight to a delicate space. Plus, the industrial-style candle cages serve as a grownup centerpiece in the middle of the powder-green room.
